Brew #15

This is a modified Oktoberfest/Marzen recipe found on the internet to scale from 5 to 8 gallons. I substituted Liberty hops and didn’t bother with a german malt like carapils that wasn’t available at my LHBS. (I think for head retention.)

Style History

Märzen, the historical designation, was made in the cool of spring; Oktoberfest, the more recent appellation, was brewed to savor during the changing season. Before refrigeration, beer was often made only from autumn into spring, as summer conditions were risky for lager fermentation. Märzen means March in German. Made in March, stored for beyond.

This Bier Information

This recipe relies on Munich Malt and PIlsner Malt to give the traditional malty taste. Caramunich Malt has been added for color. Liberty hops used for bittering as I couldn’t find any Tradition or Hallertau at the moment. Lowers the IBU to a nice low 21 though.
